Liminality describes a state of transition. It is an ethnological concept that has also found its way into popular culture in the form of ‘liminal spaces’. For the visual representation of this concept, it was important not to show any people. This meant that all the scenes at the airport and on the tram had to be filmed at night. The camera was often stationary on a tripod; to convey a sense of movement nonetheless, we sought subjects with subtle movements within the scene. This resulted in moving images that differ sufficiently from still images without appearing dull.
